# Breakdowns and downtime

> See which assets break down, how often, how long they take to fix, and what it costs.

Opmaint tracks breakdowns per asset, so you can see which machines fail most, how long repairs take and what they cost.

## Where to find it

Open any asset from **Assets** > **Assets**:

| Where | What it shows |
| - | - |
| **Details** tab | Whether the asset is **Online**, plus pending, completed and overdue work orders |
| **Breakdown History** tab | Every breakdown work order on the asset, with a timeline filter, search, sorting and download |
| **Analytics** tab | Breakdown work orders completed, **MTTR** (mean time to repair) and **MTBF** (mean time between failures) |

## Read the numbers

* **MTBF going up** means the asset is failing less often. Preventive work is paying off.
* **MTTR going up** means repairs are taking longer. Check whether the delay is spares, skills or approvals.
* **Breakdown work orders vs preventive work orders** shows whether you are getting ahead of failures or chasing them.

## Using breakdown data

> **Find your worst assets**
>
> The few machines that cause most breakdowns are where preventive maintenance pays back fastest.

> **Spot the real cause**
>
> If repairs keep waiting on parts, the fix is your [critical spares](/parts-and-inventory), not your technicians.
