# Categories

> Group work orders and assets by category so you can filter and report on them.

Categories let you group work in whatever way suits your team, such as by trade (electrical, mechanical), by type of job, or by customer or project.

You find them under **Categories** in the left sidebar. The list shows each category's description and its **Total WO count**.

## Create a category

**1. Start a new category**

Click **Categories** in the sidebar, then **+ Create Category**.

**2. Fill in the details**

Enter the category name and description.

**3. Create**

Save the category.

You can also add a category on the spot while creating a work order: click **+ New Category** under the **Category** field.

## Where categories are used

* **Work orders:** the **Category** field, and the **Category** filter on the work order list
* **Assets:** the **Category** field
