# Locations and zones

> Organise each branch into locations, zones and subzones so every asset has a physical address.

Your main site, such as a plant or a store, is a [branch](/branches). Inside each branch, Opmaint organises the site in three levels.

| Level | What it is | Examples |
| - | - | - |
| **Location** | A place within the branch | A building, block or wing of the site |
| **Zone** | A physical area inside a location | Utility block, production hall, ground floor, pump house |
| **Subzone** | A smaller area inside a zone | Compressor room, line 2, east wing |

Assets, work orders and reports all hang off this structure. When a job comes in, the zone tells the technician exactly where to go.

## Set up zones by physical area

Create zones for the places equipment actually sits, not for categories of equipment.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Do not group spread-out equipment into one system zone such as "Fire Safety" or "Electrical". Every asset, including fire extinguishers and other fire safety equipment, should sit in the zone where it is physically mounted. That way, when an item needs replacing, the team knows which area to walk to.

Use [asset types](/assets#asset-types) to group equipment by category instead. You can then filter all fire extinguishers across every zone in one view.

You find all three under **Location & Zones** in the left sidebar. Create them in order: locations first, then zones, then subzones.

**3. Create**

## Multiple sites

If you run plants or stores in more than one city, each one is its own [branch](/branches). This keeps assets, work and history separate per site, and you can still look at all branches together on **Home**.
