# Sensors and IoT

> Connect sensors to your assets so readings flow into Opmaint on their own.

Connected sensors send readings such as temperature and vibration straight into Opmaint, so you do not depend on someone walking a round with a clipboard.

## How it fits together

**1. Sensor on the asset**

The sensor is fixed to the equipment and measures what you care about.

**2. Automatic meter in Opmaint**

In Opmaint, the sensor's readings land on a meter set to **Meter Type** > **Automatic (sensor)**. See [Meters](/meters).

**3. Action**

The meter's **Out of Range Action** raises a request or work order when a reading crosses its limits. See [Meter alerts](/meter-alerts).

**4. Monitoring**

**Asset Monitoring** shows each asset's alert status day by day. See [Asset monitoring](/asset-monitoring).

## Where to start

Pick a few critical assets where an unnoticed fault is expensive: compressors, chillers, cold rooms, motors on a bottleneck line. Prove the value there before rolling sensors out wider.
